Apprenticeship Levy Presents Unique Opportunity for Academies

Apprenticeship Levy Presents Unique Opportunity for Academies

As an Academy Business Manager or School Bursar you’ve no doubt seen by now the additional National Insurance contribution you’re now making by way of the Apprenticeship Levy payment. It’s possible you’re still wondering how to make the most of the opportunities that the reforms present. It is our belief at The Apprentice Finder that the Apprenticeship Levy presents a unique opportunity for Academies. Read on to find out how…

Apprenticeship Levy you say?…

Just in case you haven’t heard about it, here is an article on what the Apprenticeship Levy is.

We’re sure you are already aware of what the levy is and that your educational establishment is subject to making payments already. So why is the apprenticeship levy a unique opportunity for academies?

The reason is because educational establishments (academies in particular) are the only entities that can benefit in two ways. Firstly, you can use the apprenticeship levy to open the conversation with students about their careers options once they complete their education and secondly you can use the digital vouchers you’re building up in your levy account to ensure that your academy has a staff base who are all equipped with the skills needed to run an effective operation. We will now go into a little more detail on each…

Students

Young people today face a dizzying array of choice when it comes to taking their next step away from secondary education. Until recently it was accepted that in order to maximise potential, you had to go to university after completing A Levels. This is no longer the case because a whole range of apprenticeship opportunities also now exist which mean that anyone can now gain a higher level of education whilst working through apprenticeships. There are pros and cons to each route, but providing each student takes care to look in detail at each option open to them they should be able to choose the most appropriate one for their needs.

Staffing

Academies must also make choices on how to staff their establishments to ensure they meet all their objectives in a world where finance and funding available is in ever decreasing supply. So just how do you make the most of the resource you have?

One of the ways is to embrace apprenticeships into the school as much as possible. You’re probably aware that you can use apprenticeships to train staff in administration, catering, facilities, IT and other ancilliary areas, but did you know that it is possible to train teaching staff through apprenticeships too?

Holistic approach

Our recommendation would be to a holistic approach to ensure you have the staff base equipped to meet the needs and objectives of the school. To do this most effectively you reference your staffing and training requirements with your overall organisation objectives. Once you have identified where your skills gaps are, there are only a couple of options remaining-

Recruit externally or promote from within.

Recruiting externally can be a costly and risky process. A safer option would be to promote a valued and trusted staff member instead. But what if they don’t have the skills required to perform the new role effectively? This is where apprenticeships come in as there will be a suitable training option available to support and develop the staff member. This then has the effect of pushing your external recruitment need further down your overall hierarchy. The effect of this then means being able to recruit at a lower cost, with lower risk and build a reputation as an employer that develops a strong, well-trained team that others will want to be part of.

We’re sure you can think of many other benefits to this approach, but why not examine them in more detail with The Apprentice Finder? An initial consultation will help you understand how to make the most of the opportunities apprenticeships present for both your students and your staff members.
